FAQs for Kids Music Classes

See below a list of answers to some common questions Balaclava Music Studio commonly receives.

Do I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?

It is best if you have an acoustic piano at home, but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard to practice on at home.  It is recommended that it is a full-sized with weighted keys.

What if my child starts out in the lessons and does not want to continue?

As with any musical instrument it does take some time to develop a basic level of playing. I recommend taking a full term of lessons before making a decision.

Can I sit in on my child’s music lesson?

Absolutely!  There is an open-door policy at the studio.  It is your choice whether to sit in, relax in the waiting area or run some errands. For some students, a parent in the room can be distracting and some work better with a parent in the room. As I get to know your child we will see what works best.

How much practice should my child do each week?

I get many questions about how much practicing should my child do. Some children naturally gravitate to their instrument without any prompting, others need some encouragement and some work best with an incentive or goal. Naturally it is best to make practicing part of your child’s routine. So, if right away we can show how practicing can achieve wonderful things, it’s usually not an issue.

Do you have studio recitals?

There are two formal recitals held each year – one at Christmas, and one in June. There are also other performance opportunities throughout the year; Halloween, Spring, and local music festivals. These recitals are a special event that students look forward to and are held at a local church with a reception afterwards. Recitals are open to all students but is not mandatory.

Do you teach adults?

Yes! Lessons can begin at any age.
